Abstract
This introductory course surveys British children’s and young adult literature from the Victorian age to the present. Through novels, poems, and short stories, students will explore how these texts imagine childhood and (young) adulthood, and how they construct heroes and role models for young readers. Alongside primary works, theoretical texts on Children’s and Young Adult literature will provide critical tools for examining the genre’s cultural functions and historical transformations. The course equips students with skills in literary and cultural text analysis while highlighting the significance of writing for young audiences in shaping social values and identities.
