This workshop brings together scholars from different disciplines to explore conceptualizations, practices and politics of luxury (consumption) in contemporary culture. A dialogue will be forged between linguistic approaches to luxury (‘the semantics of luxury’) and critical analyses of how luxury is represented in mainstream media but also contemporary art. Special attention will be paid to the question of art as luxury and to what extent practices of luxury may replicate and/or subvert existing power structures. This workshop is held within the framework of the research initiative "Diversität und Transformation: Interdisziplinäre Forschungsperspektiven auf heterogene Gesellschaften" (see: https://diversitaet-und-transformation.projects.rptu.de/). |
