Independent Studies I (BEd, Modul 7.3)
Credits: 2 CP (= 60h)
Design and objectives of the course
In this self-study course, students become familiar with digital tools and AI-based writing assistants that are (or can be) used in the EFL classroom. Following the instructions in an accompanying OLAT-course, they document their independent work and reflect on their experience with these materials. Students work in groups of 3-4.
Component A (50%): Schoolbook publishers provide digital teaching assistants (digitale Unterrichtsassistenten) for their textbooks. In this component, each group selects one of the textbooks of the Klett series Green Line and chooses one specific unit to work on. Students familiarise themselves with the digital teaching assistant for this unit and document their experience in an OLAT-portfolio (advantages, challenges, limitations, disadvantages), following the instructions in the accompanying OLAT-course. The tools are made available in the self-study centre for languages (Selbstlernzentrum/SLZ).
Component B (50%): AI-based writing tools such as ChatGPT or DeepL Write have become a reality that cannot be ignored in the EFL classroom context. In this component, students critically engage with such tools. Following the instructions/tasks in the accompanying OLAT-course, they document their work, reflect on and discuss their experiences with these tools with their group members and review the output of the AI-tool in an OLAT-portfolio.
We will meet in an in-person session in the first or second week of the semester to introduce this course (dates will be announced). |
