This seminar will cover three masterpieces of narrative graphic fiction, all of which are outstanding in their makeup. Students work on distinguishing features of the graphic novel in general and ofthe individual work. Finally, we shall work on a piece of world literature and its - very recent - graphic adaptation.

Generally, as for graphic novels, it is strongly recommended to buy the paperback (or hard cover – if there is no other) version of the work since that is infinitely more appropriate to work with in the classroom (both at uni and high school): you can make annotations on the paper and/or stick post-its on important pages to quickly find them. Also, it takes infinitely more time to find certain pages (if you don’t know their numbers) by browsing digital images.

ISBN 978-0141014081. – Though it may be tempting to buy MetaMaus (2011) by the same author because of its containing a DWD with a digital version of the two Maus books, that digital version is inappropriate for intensive analysis since the pages appear as much too small on the computer screen.
- Lutes, Jason. Berlin (Book I: City of Stones; Book II: City of Smoke; Book III: City of Light). Drawn & Quarterly, 2020. ISBN 978-1770464063 – The single editions of each Berlin book are out of print, and only the omnibus edition can be had brand-new, either as a paperback or ebook. In the seminar, we shall work on the first two Berlin books (if you can buy the single ones used, that is an option).
