This seminar examines the complex evolution of Australia’s cultural and national identity. We will analyze both universal themes—such as class, gender, and eco-criticism—and issues specific to Australia, including post-colonial historiography and the tensions between the White Australia policy and multiculturalism. The course will also explore how Australian identity has been constructed, contested, and represented in film, television, and theatre, offering insights into the nation’s changing self-perception.
Material and secondary literature will be announced at the beginning of term. |
