Der Inhalt dieses Seminars wird in der schriftlichen Prüfung zur Vorlesung Teaching EFL to YL abgefragt. Das Seminar muss nach oder gleichzeitig zu der Vorlesung besucht werden.
Die Prüfung gilt als bestanden, wenn mindestens 60 % der Gesamtpunktzahl UND jeweils mindestens 50 % in den beiden Teilen der Prüfung erreicht wurden. Werden die 50 % in einem oder beiden Teilen nicht erreicht, gilt die Klausur als nicht bestanden.
Da für Vorlesung und Seminar jeweils 4 LPs vergeben werden, müssen Sie mit einer stark erhöhten Arbeitsbelastung rechnen. Es ist nur dann ratsam, Vorlesung und Seminar gleichzeitig zu besuchen, wenn Sie abschätzen können, dass Sie wirklich genug Zeit haben.

Teaching English to YL - Focus on Cultural Studies & Children's Literature
Intercultural and Citizenship Education through picturebooks (ICETEMP)

Picturebooks offer powerful stories and images for discussing intercultural and citizenship topics in EFL classrooms. In this class, you are going to learn how to select picturebooks that allow for meaningful engagement with such topics and how to organize preparation activities, read-alouds and multisensory hands-on follow-up activities for primary learners of English. You will be introduced to dialogic teaching approaches and practise using these techniques during picturebook-based EFL teaching. As this class is part of the EU-funded ICETEMP project that brings together teacher educators and student teachers from five different countries (Portugal, Spain, Italy, Turkey and Germany), you will be able to share and discuss your insights with other fellow student teachers in Europe using the e-twinning platform.
Please note that this course is organised as a block seminar starting in March to allow for communication with other Europoean students. The dates are:

Blockseminar, TEYL: Focus on Cultural Studies and Square Dance
Kids Need Action! Learning English by Moving

Square Dance is a lively American dance which provides a huge variety of possibilities for its integration in primary school classes. Since the dance commands (calls) consist of basic English words that are highly relevant in the primary school context, it is quite easy to adapt them to many different learning areas and situations. Integration is of highest priority and active movements, music and activity-based learning in combination with group dance and always changing dance commands are the reasons for a long-lasting learning motivation and achievement. Furthermore, the seminar offers general and cultural facts and insights in those English-speaking countries that form the basis of the American Modern Square Dance, i.e. England, Ireland, Scotland, and, of course, the USA.
The seminar is offered as a “Blockseminar” and is limited to max. 24 participants. This limitation is absolutely necessary because the active learning of the dance, rhythm and music is part of the seminar and needs much practice time and individual care in combination with English speaking practice, pronunciation and cultural studies.
The seminar, however, consists of two parts, which both will alternate during each block session, i.e.
(a) theoretical knowledge on cultural studies and didactics, i.e. on
– the countries (facts and figures) and their cultures in interdependence with the dance and its integration at school
– didactic theories and methods to integrate English via Square Dance in all other learning areas of primary school
– music, rhythm, choreography, body flow, voice quality
– skills in planning (and teaching) the dance in class
(b) active/practical skills of
- dancing in circles, lines and squares
– learning and teaching about 15 figures of the dance
– learning how to call and administer the dance in an authentic classroom situation
This is done in a lively and joyful dance workshops taking place on TWO Saturdays. Hence, if you can’t fully participate in these Saturday units, you can’t be accepted for the course.
During the Square Dance Party at the beginning of the course and during the two practice workshops, you will have an additional instructor (professional caller and dancing teacher).
Course language: English and German (depends on the different parts of the course)
Students are required to participate actively in the discussions in class and, within a group, must prepare a short presentation on a country-related cultural topic (in English) and show its transfer into an authentic classroom situation.
There will either be a written exam at the end of the term or a written evaluation on the practical part (portfolio in groups of up to 3) if you choose a practical implication with the introduction of the dance in a primary school.

b) Do not miss the practical training units (= dancing workshops)! They are the basis for the complete seminar!
If you don't have time on the 24th/25th April 2026 and the 23rd May 2025 you can't participate in the course!

Exploring British culture in primary EFL – realia, picturebooks, nursery rhymes and hands-on activities

This course aims at developing your understanding of British culture. You will learn about the country's geography and famous sights that are linked to important aspects of British history. You will also find out about everyday modern life such as schooling, housing, religious practices, festivals and food. For every topic we explore, we will discuss how realia, picturebooks and rhymes can engage young learners in hands-on activities that help them to develop their intercultural awareness. Finally, you will get the opportunity to apply some of these teaching ideas when you prepare and hold your own mini teaching session about a cultural aspect of your choice.

Intercultural and Citizenship Education through Pictures Books!

This course will cover picture book meditation, dialogic teaching, and reading aloud within the context of EAL (English as an Additional Language) lessons. The picture books used will emphasise themes that teach intercultural and citizenship education. As part of the flipped classroom, students will be expected to prepare to discuss texts on TPR, differentiation, language acquisition, picture book mediation, dialogic teaching, etc. in advance of class sessions. Regular attendance and active, enthusiastic participation is required.
Participants:
Students with an emphasis or specialisation in primary school education who have chosen English as their main or IFB subject and completed and passed all BEd courses.
Prerequisites:

"Cultural Studies: Teaching English to Young Learners" is an exciting and challenging course designed to prepare elementary teachers to apply the study of world cultures in teaching English in their classrooms. Be prepared to become an "explorer" as you travel around the world, locating various countries and learning about what defines a culture; e.g. geography, story telling, games, religion, values, beliefs, traditions and food. Students will then have the opportunity to demonstrate various methods in which they can take what they have learned and apply it in their classrooms. In addition to learning how to set up a culturally diverse classroom environment, students will plan a theme-based syllabus with a variety of activities they can actually take with them to use in their classrooms when they begin their teaching career. Students will also be given the opportunity to teach their peers, choosing a country of their choice to explore in depth and then teach about in our seminar. Get your passport ready, pack your bag and prepare to discover the wonder of world cultures. As with any travel experience, this seminar requires a full commitment. Critical listening and reading, collaborative thinking and a willingness to reflect on the exploration we undertake together are essential tools you will bring to the class. At the successful completion of the seminar, you will be able to cultivate an atmosphere of inquiry in your elementary classroom and inspire in your students an appreciation of all cultures.
