Information on the course taught by Prof. Dr. Stella Butter
This survey provides an introduction to key authors, genres and periods in British literature from the Renaissance to the present. By concentrating on selected canonical texts, we will discuss the connections between the development of aesthetic forms and changing socio-historical life worlds. We will also address the question of how older works of literature continue to speak to us today. By the end of the seminar, students will (1) be familiar with major texts and traditions of English literature, (2) be able to relate developments in the literary field to socio-historical contexts, and (3) demonstrate skills in analysing literary texts.
