Course Description:
This course is specifically designed for BEd students with the aim of becoming a primary school teacher and therefore studying English in the IFB programme. We will look at some relevant linguistic disciplines from an applied perspective. The main focus will be on phonetics and phonology, especially how to read and write words and phrases in the International Phonetic Alphabet. Further topics will discuss practical speech aspects such as connected speech (assimilation, elision, linking), stress patterns, silent letters, and intonation. Instead of using one particular course book, we will draw upon a variety of materials in a reader that will be used in each session.
Participants:
BEd students of the IFB-English programme (module 4a) who are usually in their 5th semester.
Prerequisites:
Active and regular attendance and preparing homework are self-evident prerequisites.
During the semester, students are expected to work on an accompanying OLAT Phonetics COURSE. This can be done anytime within the week of the seminar's lecture topic. Please make sure that you have at least one hour each week to perform this task. Students need to give proof of having completed the programme at the end of the semester in order to get the mark of the written exam registered in Klips.

For exercises and further information, a reader will be available and can be purchased at the copy shop in Trappengasse at the beginning of the semester. You are well-advised to get a good pronunciation dictionary, e.g. The English Pronouncing Dictionary by Cambridge University Press or Klett/Pons (preferably with CD-Rom) or at least a monolingual dictionary. To pass the final test it will certainly be of further help to have some extra practice in the Sprachlernzentrum.
Certificates: There will be a written exam at the end of the semester.
ECTS evaluation: 4 LP
Die Prüfung gilt als bestanden, wenn mindestens 60 % der Gesamtpunktzahl UND jeweils mindestens 50 % in den beiden Teilen der Prüfung erreicht wurden. Werden die 50 % in einem oder beiden Teilen nicht erreicht, gilt die Klausur als nicht bestanden.
Students who failed the exam, are not allowed to enlist in the course again (in case of lack of space), but need to retake the exam!
