In the day-to-day running of academic life, researchers must regularly communicate the results of their work to audiences who are not so familiar with their research topic. These could be external funding providers, conference attendees or collaboration partners. Perhaps they are also involved in their university’s outreach activities and interact directly with members of the general public? Or they are working on an application for an EU project, for which they must submit a communication strategy for their research project during the application phase. Addressing these different communicative situations poses a considerable challenge for many researchers. In this seminar, participants will therefore be provided with a toolkit to help them prepare effectively for any form of public communication.

For each part of the seminar, participants complete exercises either individually or in small groups, so that by the end of the second day of the seminar they will have tried out all the key tools for communicating with non-specialist audiences. In the subsequent project phase, they then develop their own communication strategy, which they present at the final event.

Kommentar

The course provides an introduction to the practice of environmental journalism, i.e. journalistic writing, and, following a brief overview, focuses in particular on the journalistic formats of news reports, features and interviews, as well as research techniques. The course is run in collaboration with Ms Kristin Raabe, a freelance journalist, producer and author. The detailed term schedule will be discussed during the first session.

***Note regarding the final module examination for the M.M. Scientific Skills module***

The final examination for the M.M. module consists of a term paper (in the broad sense), which is written as part of (or in relation to) one of the module’s courses. Students choose one of the three courses in which they will write the term paper. The format, length and content of the term paper are determined by the lecturer who most recently taught the relevant course (and announced at the start of the course); this lecturer will grade the term paper.

All students (regardless of which of the three modules their term paper relates to) must register for the final module examination at https://klips.rptu.de/v/165644 and submit their term paper by email to the relevant lecturer by 31 July 2026 (12:00 noon) at the latest.
