Description:
The objective of the module CHE3 is to provide an overview of the role of polyphenols in the terrestrial environment, as secondary metabolites produced by plants. Polyphenolic compounds are characterized by aromatic structures (mono or polycyclic) and by at least one hydroxy group attached at the benzene ring. They are active biomolecules synthetized by plants under specific conditions. The chemical diversity of the phenols is large and therefore their effects on soil biogeochemical processes are diverse. The main entry pathway of polyphenols, in particular into soils, is plant root exudation and plant debris. In the context of the organic ecological chemistry, specific polyphenolic compounds may represent an indirect biomarker of stress response of plants. Specific objectives of the course. In the case of secondary metabolites of fungi, these will be assessed from the perspective of stress mediated response and as xenobiotics with toxic effects for humans and animals
- To evaluate the chemistry and properties of specific secondary metabolites and to suggest methods of analysis
- To gain information of soil biogeochemical processes and on the role of polyphenolic compounds on those processes
- To gain experience and training in analysis of polyphenols and mycotoxins in soil samples and in methods to assess specific soil processes
Further objectives
- To improve skills in literature research and scientific writing
- To get familiar with proposal writing for example for master thesis application
