Literary theory empowers readers: it helps us understand the structure of literary texts and how literature both reflects and shapes cultural values and ideologies. In this course, we will engage with key theories of literature and apply these approaches in our readings of literary texts. Approaches covered include reader-response criticism, structuralism, deconstruction, gender studies, and postcolonial theory. By the end of this course, students will be familiar with major developments within literary theory and demonstrate skills in applying critical methods in their readings of literature.
