This course will examine figurations of difference in three recent British novels. While Caleb Azumah Nelson’s debut novel Open Water (2021) allows us to focus on explorations of racism and masculinity, Sarah Moss’ short Ghost Wall (2018) foregrounds social/ class differences against the backdrop of a deep history theme. Finally, Jan Carson’s The Fire Starters (2019) intertwines fantasies of radical otherness in a magical realist plot line with a realistic setting in post-referendum, pre-Brexit Belfast.
