In this seminar we will explore the multifaceted journey of Australia's cultural and national identity. We will be analysing both universal struggles like class, gender and eco-criticism as well as tensions unique to Australia like post-colonial historiography and the White Australia vs. Multiculturalism policies. We will also examine and discuss how Australian identity has been portrayed and challenged in film, television, and theatre, reflecting the nation's evolving self-image. Theories we will be working with, among others, are identity theories, post-colonial theory, gender and class theory, eco-criticism and nation as narrative.
Through student presentations and classroom discussions, we will explore the historical context of Australian identity, the impact of diverse cultural narratives, and the representation of a nation. Join this seminar to gain a deeper understanding of Australia's diverse identity and its portrayal in popular culture.
Material and secondary literature will be announced at the beginning of term. |
