COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL)
In this course, you will be introduced to key concepts in the teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL) in a primary school setting.
We will cover the following topics:
- FL teaching to young learners in the past and current trends in primary EFL programmes in Germany and beyond
- primary EFL in Rhineland-Palatinate - documents for parents and curricular guidelines
- language development in natural settings (L1 acquisition)
- FL learning in classroom settings and characteristic features of classroom discourse
- foreign language anxiety
- past and present FL teaching methods
- characteristics of (very) young learners and good practice principles for primary ELT
- vocabulary versus grammar in EFL
- teaching listening and speaking
- teaching reading and writing
- introducing young learners to cultural aspects of English-speaking countries
- stories, songs and chants in the primary EFL classroom
- selecting appropriate material and lesson planning
- classroom management
PARTICIPANTS
Primary school students who have chosen English as their main or IFB subject and completed all BEd courses
PREREQUISITES
You are required to read several academic papers every week. There are additional video clips that students are expected to watch. Our reading material and links to audiovisual support can be found on OLAT.
ASSESSMENT
The exam is part of the Modulprüfung M9 that covers TEYL lecture and seminar.
Die Prüfung gilt als bestanden, wenn mindestens 60 % der Gesamtpunktzahl UND jeweils mindestens 50 % in den beiden Teilen der Prüfung erreicht wurden. Werden die 50 % in einem oder beiden Teilen nicht erreicht, gilt die Klausur als nicht bestanden.
